In 1990 I discovered a student pottery coop in our neighborhood and my passion for pottery was born. Although my education is in music (I have a bachelors and masters degree in piano performance from Northwestern University), I have taken many workshops in ceramics, from Cleveland Institute of Art, and from Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, (where my teachers have been Eddie Dominguez, Val Cushing and Linda Arbuckle) among others. In 1995 I gave up my job teaching musicianship at Oberlin Conservatory in order to devote more time to my two loves: teaching piano to children and making pottery.
My pots are made from a red terracotta clay, which is formed on the wheel and then altered, carved and sculpted by hand. Some pieces are slab built. After a bisque firing, pots are glazed on the outside with a lead free glaze and lined on the inside with a food safe, non-toxic glaze, then given a final firing. Black maiolica pieces are glazed and painted with overglazes before the last firing. My inspiration comes from the nature I find outside in my garden, and in the woods surrounding my summer home in Goose Pond (NH). Color, rhythm and texture are qualities I have learned to prize after many years of training and work as a classical musician. All items are glazed terracotta, extreme temperature changes should be avoided. Preheat teapots and platters briefly with hot tap water. Dishwasher and microwave safe, but oven use is not recommended. Animal bowls are 3-pc., top/bottom lids, and a spoon which is the head, tongue, etc.![]()
