Caleb is an emerging Cleveland glass artist working in hand blown glass. At the start of Caleb's career he was fixated on traditional Venetian forms and techniques. After becoming proficient in the many Venetian methods, Caleb began to rebel against these processes. His belief is that while Venetian forms are beautiful within themselves, they disregard the organic, free flowing, natural characteristics that are unique to glass as a medium.
In his non-traditional vessel series Caleb exploits the inherent organic characteristics of glass in a way that exemplify the movement of growth in nature. The process that drives Caleb`s work is influenced heavily by Jackson Pollock’s process of non-traditional paint application. Pollock controlled color, rhythm and orientation of the canvas. However, when he physically applied the paint he relinquished control to gravity. Caleb uses a similar process. He controls color, heat and orientation of the blowpipe. Then he surrenders each piece to gravity-- freeing the glass. This freedom allows the glass to react to its surroundings naturally. The resulting non-traditional vessel forms relate a balanced, graceful understanding of the properties inherent in glass, while still exhibiting the traditional skills essential to creating an aesthetically pleasing sculptural work of art. |
